Domestic Violence

Domestic violence statistics and information

Domestic violence is a national and worldwide problem that needs to be addressed. Of all the injuries to women in the country each year, the most common cause is domestic violence.

Domestic Violence Statistics

Most of the people who handle security and human resources on a corporate level count domestic violence among some of the top security risks for their companies. This is because workplace violence isn't uncommon, and most workplace violence is carried out by the woman's husband, boyfriend or someone she knows on a personal level.

In fact, most people in charge of corporate business know who within their organization suffers with domestic violence. It's an expensive problem, with victims missing work much more often. The cost of emergency health care after abuse, rape and attempted murder adds to that financial burden. Between 90 and 95 percent of those who suffer as victims of domestic violence are women. This amounts to almost 5.5 million women abused and almost 1,400 women killed each year as a result.

Of all the deaths while at work, the most common cause for women is homicide – almost always by an intimate partner. This is one of the facts that comes up at every domestic violence conference, and corporations are working on a way to get this number lower, through things like interventions and resources for battered women. Other domestic violence statistics show that if a man hits you once, he's suddenly much more likely to do it again. And you should never allow anyone to hit you.

When to Seek a Domestic Violence Shelter

The domestic violence statistics show that the longer you remain with an abusive person, the more likely they are to do serious physical harm to you and even kill you. If you have been abused by this person in the past, they're much more likely to do it again than not. If you have been abused or are being abused, seek a domestic violence shelter immediately. And if you have children, it's even more important that you seek help to protect them and yourself.
