Guide to healthy cooking and recipes

Today, finding healthy recipes is easier than ever before thanks to a variety of websites that feature healthy foods and meal combinations. You can find healthy cooking recipes in magazines devoted to them, or just in regular magazines that focus on family and health. A variety of magazines and websites are even devoted to healthy food recipes for special diets like for those trying to lose weight or those with diabetes.

Healthy Cooking and Recipes

If you're looking for online healthy recipes, the hardest part of your search will be choosing which great heart-healthy recipes to actually try. A simple search will usually bring up dozens if not hundreds of healthy recipes of the type you're looking for. How do you choose between all those recipes? And how can you tell which are more heart healthy recipes than others?

Finding the healthiest of all the recipes that are returned when you search isn't as hard as you might think. You just need to keep some simple rules in mind. Look at the fat content of the recipe. If the numbers are very high, you might want to look for something else. This isn't true in every case, however. If the meal is higher in calories (especially if it has a lot of protein), the fat can and probably will be a little higher than average. What's more important is that the individual numbers are balanced.

If the recipe shows that it has 50 grams of carbohydrates, 1 gram of protein and several grams of fat, then it's a very carb-heavy (a.k.a. sugar and starch) recipe, and probably not your best choice even on a low-fat diet. Look for a good ratio between fat, carbohydrates and protein.

Healthy Recipes for Special Diets

If you're diabetic, don't just look at the grams of sugar in a recipe. Look at how much flour and corn starch is used in a recipe too, as this will affect your blood sugar. If you're on a low-fat or low-cholesterol diet, don't neglect to look at how much flour and sugar are in a recipe, too, and how many carbs that gives. Too much sugar means it's not one of the healthy recipes you're probably looking for.
