Treating upper and lower back pain

Most people feel soreness in their back at one time or another. For a large number of people, however, chronic back pain is a daily burden, if not a debilitating body health problem.

Occasional back pain is more likely to become a problem for those with poor muscle tone, bad posture or weak stomach muscles. Heavy lifting can likewise trigger back pain. Office workers are particularly prone to upper back pain, since their proclivities for sitting hunched in front of computers can put undue strains on their spinal columns. Lower back pain, on the other hand, can become a problem for a person of any lifestyle. It need not be activity-related; certain nerve disorders, abdominal conditions, disc alignment issues and other bodily ailments have lower back pain as a symptom.

Stop Back Pain Before It Happens

For those who do not yet have any back issues, some preventive strategies are in order. Whenever lifting a heavy object, lift with the legs and arms; exert the back as little as possible. Pay close attention to your posture; sit upright as much as possible. Also, do not stay seated for too long; take short walking breaks every hour or so.

And like any other bodily ailment, back pain is more preventable if you maintain good physical health. Get daily doses of vitamins and minerals—especially vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin E, calcium, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus and zinc. Also, exercise regularly, making sure to train both your upper and lower back muscles.

Those who already have back pain need not despair. Many options for back pain treatment are available. See a physician if the pain does not subside after a few days.

Chiropractic techniques such as spinal decompression have a very good track record of relieving acute back pain.

Physical therapy is also worthwhile. A physical therapist can devise exercises and pain management strategies to lessen the back pain and keep it from recurring. Water exercises and applications of heat and ice all have therapeutic value. Massage can soothe inflammation and release the tension that might be aggravating painful conditions. Lower back pain relief is worth a doctors' visit to look for underlying complications. If it is a simple sprain, then rest and the applications of heating pads and pain relievers may cure what ails it.
