Flaky Scalp

Dandruff vs. seborrheic dermatitis

Dandruff has long been thought of as a relatively mild problem that causes more social discomfort than anything. And for the most part, this is the case. A few white flakes on the shoulder can be embarrassing, but the problem is relatively easily remedied and it is no more serious than that. However, some cases of flaky scalp do indicate more serious issues, so it is important to understand the causes of the problem, especially if it is not resolved with simple over-the-counter shampoos.

Types of Scalp Problems

Scalp-related problems have numerous causes, some indicative of overall physical health, but most having to do with an imbalance in the scalp. Seborrheic dermatitis is a relatively common form of scalp issue, and a relatively harmless one as well, but treatment is widely available. This condition is known by a scaly rash that can affect the scalp, face and other areas of the trunk of the body. It is also known as eczema. This skin-related issue is often seen for the first time after puberty, and can occur at any time after that stage of life. The severity can either be mild and short-lived, or more severe and chronic, and it can lead to psoriasis. Dandruff is a mild form of seborrheic dermatitis.

Treatments

There is no actual dandruff cure, but those pesky flakes can be kept under control. Dandruff care is relatively straightforward and easily achieved, with many products available over the counter. Maintaining good hygiene and body health is an important part of treating seborrheic dermatitis. But a standard dandruff shampoo is critical to the proper treatment of the problem, at least until is it well under control. Look for shampoos that contain 2.5 percent selenium sulfide or 1 to 2 percent pyrithione zinc. Also, ketoconazole shampoo can be used. The shampoo should be left on the scalp for five to ten minutes before rinsing, and followed up with a moisturizing conditioner afterward.

For more serious cases of scalp issues, consult with your physician. Other creams and medications are available to treat these issues.
