Hearing Protection

The importance of ear and hearing protection

Hearing protection is vital when working in noisy conditions, or participating in noisy activities, such as firing a gun. In addition to this, ear plugs may be used to prevent noise from penetrating, for example Walkman ear moulds and “sleeping” ear plugs. Hearing protection comes in a variety of forms, from basic foam ear plugs to very sophisticated electronic hearing protection.

Varieties of Ear Hearing Protection

Suppliers offering hearing protection usually have a selection of Walkman ear plugs which eliminate noise from outside; these are similar to ear plugs used during sleep, often worn by those trying to sleep through the day, such as night-shift workers. These ear plugs offer comfort and quiet to the wearer, even though the noise levels are not dangerous.

Quite often, however, people find themselves in situations where noise levels are enough to risk hearing loss. Motorcycle owners often use high-end electronic ear protectors which dampen the sound of the road but also contain speakers which allow for communication with other bike riders. Ear protection is often also used by the military, and those who use shooting ranges, as this can deaden the noise of gun-fire and explosions. Shooting hearing protection often consists of standard ear muffs, as seen on TV and film. Even going to loud rock concerts can warrant the use of hearing protection – it may seem prudish now, but it’s better than dooming yourself to hearing aids later.

Choosing Hearing Protection

There are a great many hearing protection devices available in stores and online. Just taking shooting hearing protection as an example, there are several different styles, from simple, chunky muffs to state-of-the-art electronic hearing protectors; from simple plugs which fit in the ears to combinations of hearing and eye protection that combine ear muffs and specialist glasses.

Hearing protectors are now so advanced that it is possible to buy specially designed items no matter what the need; DJs and musicians, for example, need ear hearing protection which is more sophisticated than the standard hearing protector range, and so they wear specialist ear defenders known as “uniform” or “flat” attenuation plugs or earmuffs. These plugs allow the DJ to hear normal conversation, but deaden the noise of music or machines. This is just one area where ear protectors have been designed with the need of one group in mind – whatever the ear hearing protection requirement, there will be a plug or muff to fill it.
