Vision
Taking care of your eyesight
Most people take their vision for granted. No one really thinks about their eyesight—unless they happen to have a problem with it. But since the eyes perform such an important function, people should make vision care a regular part of their lives. People need to think about the health of their eyes and take the time to protect their eyes and prevent eye injuries. And those who have congenital eye disorders that necessitate the wearing of glasses or contact lenses should definitely make sure to care for their vision health.
Preventing Eye Problems
Good nutrition and health is the first step in taking care of vision. Vitamin A, antioxidants and minerals are all connected to eye health; therefore, eating a nutritious and balanced diet can help to prevent a few different types of eye issues. Xerophthalmia, which is a serious drying of the eye, can be prevented through diet; when not prevented (and when a person doesn't get enough vitamin A), it can lead to blindness. Inadequate diets can also lead to age-related macular degeneration (AMD) or other eye issues.
It is typically suggested that most people should visit an eye care professional about once per year. Many people have vision insurance coverage as a part of their regular health insurance; however, many of these people are either unaware that the vision coverage exists or they neglect to use the vision coverage. Getting a vision check each year is ideal, though, because a professional can catch potential eye issues before they become difficult to treat.
Vision Correction
Much of the time, vision problems such as astigmatism and myopia are corrected through the use of glasses or contact lenses. Other vision deterioration problems, though, including glaucoma and cataracts, are typically corrected through surgery.
Laser vision correction is an option for some types of surgery. It is often used with glaucoma these days because it has been found that it works well when used as a first-line therapy. It can wear off with time, though, so it may need to be repeated. Lasers are also used in LASIK surgery (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis), which is used to correct nearsighted and farsighted vision.
