Eating right for better health
Everyone knows that good nutrition leads to better health. However, not everyone really understands what exactly is meant by the term "good nutrition." With all of the conflicting information in the news and on the Internet these days, many people are unsure about what foods are healthy and what foods are not. For example, eggs may be a good source of protein, but are they too high in cholesterol? And what about cheese? Dairy products are high in calcium; however, they are also high in fat and calories. It can be quite confusing if you don't know the facts.
The Food Guide Pyramid
Some people became confused about eating right when the food guide pyramid changed. Previously, the pyramid was divided into horizontal sections, with the smallest section at the top. Now, however, the pyramid is divided in vertical sections, each of which starts with a line running from the tip of the pyramid to the pyramid's base. The sections are of varying width to represent the importance of that section to the daily diet.
According to today's food guide pyramid, grains (especially whole grains) are one of the most important health foods for anyone. Fresh, frozen or canned vegetables and fruits are fine, as long as safe food storage has been practiced. People should eat several servings of each per day, aiming for a variety of different fruits and vegetables every day.
The food pyramid recommends either low-fat or fat-free dairy products. So, it is definitely acceptable to eat cheese; however, full-fat cheese is not suggested. The same goes for protein—fatty forms of it are not recommended. Instead, people are told to choose low-fat meats and beans. And that egg? It turns out that it is pictured on the pyramid, so it's ok to indulge.
Choosing the Right Foods to Eat
If you are trying to eat for better health, you can seek out healthy food recipes on the Internet to help you do so. Eating right can be a challenge, though, if you are trying gourmet food at a restaurant—try to stay away from heavy sauces and carbohydrates like breads and potatoes. Fast food nutrition isn't the best, either; however, there are a few good choices you can make. Choose a salad with dressing on the side or a grilled chicken sandwich. Apple slices or oranges can complete your meal, rather than French fries.
