Menopause

What you need to know about menopause

Every woman knows to expect menopause at some point during her life; however, no woman really knows exactly when menopause will occur. For most women, menopause sets in between the ages of 45 and 55. However, some women go through several years of perimenopause (the transition phase into menopause), and the symptoms of this stage can be nearly as trying as those of menopause itself.

Other women end up going into early menopause, with some seeing the end of their menstruation cycle and fertility as early as the age of 25 or 30. Suffice it to say, each woman will go through an entirely individual menopause process.

Menopause and its Symptoms

Menopause is officially said to occur 12 months after a woman's last menstrual period. This definition makes menopause sound rather innocuous, though. The truth is that menopause can actually be rather difficult, both physically and emotionally. Women going through this trying time experience many different symptoms, including:

  • Vaginal dryness
  • Hot flashes
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Mood swings and/or depression
  • Thinning hair
  • Increased fat in the abdominal area
  • Loss of fullness and firmness in the breasts

Although menopause can be brought on by a hysterectomy or by chemotherapy and radiation treatments for cancer, most women experience it naturally as part of the aging process. Natural menopause is caused by a decline in the body's production of reproductive hormones. As women age, the ovaries begin producing less estrogen and progesterone. This causes changes in menstruation which continue until, eventually, the woman no longer has any periods at all.

Important Menopause Information

Women should talk to their doctors for help dealing with menopausal symptoms. Doctors may suggest a menopause diet, specific exercises or medications that can help. Post menopause symptoms usually fade quickly; however, a doctor can help with any lingering issues. Sex after menopause is definitely possible – it can even be more fun since there is no chance of pregnancy. Vaginal lubricants can help with any dryness issues.

Male menopause is a very real issue; however, it is much different than female menopause. It involves hormonal changes in men and can be eased with the help of your doctor.
