What to know about your reporoductive health

Every day, all around the world, thousands of women get pregnant. It may seem like an afterthought to many people, since pregnancy and childbirth are facts of life for people of all cultures.

However, pregnancy itself is actually a very intricate and complicated process, one that many doctors and scientists have closely studied. In order to have a simple, safe and healthy pregnancy, a woman and her partner must be in good physical health and they must have no reproductive health issues. The lengthy process of pregnancy is actually rather amazing, when studied closely.

The Reproductive Systems

For centuries, little medical intervention was sought by pregnant women; women who were in good reproductive health handled the childbirth mostly on their own, or with the assistance of other women in their families. These days, however, medical science has a great deal of help to offer pregnant women.

Most doctors say that women should visit a gynecologist for a complete check-up before even attempting to become pregnant. The purpose of a gynecological examination is to ensure that the woman is in sound health. The gynecologist checks the patient’s entire female reproductive system – including the uterus, cervix and ovaries – to ensure that there are no underlying issues that would compromise or complicate a pregnancy. The ovaries must be producing healthy eggs and the uterus must be expandable enough to contain a developing baby, for example.

Men should also be checked before trying to impregnate a partner, though they typically visit their general practitioner rather than a specialist. The male reproductive system is examined to ensure proper functioning – for example, a sperm count is done to ensure that the man produces enough quality sperm to make impregnation likely.

These examinations also help couples anticipate any possible fertility issues. One or both partners can be treated for infertility if needed, to heighten the chances that the woman becomes pregnant.

Preparing for Pregnancy

When trying to get pregnancy, there are a few other recommendations most doctors make. It is typically suggested that women take prenatal vitamins, for example. Maintaining an ideal weight by eating a healthy diet is also advised. Partaking in daily exercise, limiting alcohol intake and quitting smoking are also highly recommended.
